Acer Predator 21 X Review: Excessive Power and Performance

First, the Acer Predator 21 X is massive—not just big, but a behemoth. Its 21-inch curved screen makes it stand out in any environment, and it’s clear this thing is for serious gamers who want an immersive experience. Let’s take a look.

Acer Predator 21 X: The Big Boy of Gaming Laptops

The sheer size of the Acer Predator 21 X will shock you almost every time. Whether you’re seeing it for the first time as you take it out of the custom Pelican case it ships in, watching someone struggle to carry it to a meeting, or sitting down to see it at a desk day after day, this 21-inch, nearly 19 pound laptop is hard to ignore. It’s a device that looks like it’s been fed on smaller laptops, and the screen alone is thicker than that of a MacBook Pro.

A Head Turner

Announced at IFA 2016, the Predator 21 X was never meant to be practical or affordable. It’s the ultimate “what if?” device – a look into what hardware can do when you throw common sense and logic out the window. The design is bold and aggressive, with sharp angles, RGB lighting, and a curved screen that enhances the gaming experience.

The laptop is built with high-quality materials, so it feels premium for its price. Attention to detail is evident from the customizable RGB keyboard to the intricate cooling vents to manage the heat from the powerful components. This is not just a laptop; it’s a statement piece of gaming technology.

Unbeatable Specs

Weighing 18.76 pounds, the Predator 21 X is a behemoth of a laptop. With a price tag of $8,999.99, it’s not just weight that the 21 X outclasses the competition. Under the hood, it has top-of-the-line specs, including a high refresh rate display, powerful NVIDIA graphics, and a robust Intel processor, so it can handle the most demanding games and apps with ease.

The laptop has a 21-inch curved screen with 2560 x 1080 resolution for an immersive experience. G-Sync technology eliminates screen tearing and smooths gameplay, so it’s a favorite among serious gamers.

Beyond Gaming

Yes, it’s still a laptop with a screen, keyboard, mouse, and batteries that can, in theory, be used on the go. But in reality, using the Predator 21 X as a portable device is a different story. Its weight and size make it more suitable for a stationary setup, where it can truly be a gaming beast.

Despite its bulk, the Predator 21 X has multiple USB ports, HDMI, and a Thunderbolt 3 port, so you can connect various peripherals and external displays. It’s a great option for gamers who want a complete gaming setup.

The Ultimate Gaming Laptop

This is the biggest, most powerful, and most expensive gaming laptop ever made. Acer has made the most of the Predator 21 X’s massive size, packing as much as they can into it. The specs of the 21 X are pure overkill; it’s a beast in the gaming laptop market.

Unbeatable Specs

At the heart of the Predator, 21 X is a Core i7 Skylake Intel processor overclocked to 4.1 GHz, which provides blazing-fast performance for the most demanding apps. It also has two SLI-linked GTX 1080 GPUs and 16GB of dedicated onboard VRAM, so it can easily handle the latest games at high settings.

It has USB-C, USB 3.0, HDMI, two DisplayPorts, and an SD card slot. 64GB of DDR4 system RAM makes multitasking a breeze, and you can run multiple apps without a hitch. It has five fans to keep everything cool and five storage slots: three SATA and two PCIe. Acer is shipping a single config with a 1TB hard drive and 2 500GB SSD in RAID, so you have plenty of storage for games and media.

The Tobii eye-tracking rig adds to the experience by allowing you to control certain aspects of the game with your gaze. Of course, the curved 21-inch screen is the showstopper, the first of its kind in a laptop. The screen has a 120Hz refresh rate and NVIDIA’s G-Sync technology for smooth visuals for competitive gaming. Side by side with any other laptop (gaming or otherwise), it’s like the punchline of a joke: “You call that a laptop? No, THIS is a laptop.”

Design

While the 21 X’s size and specs are impressive, Acer didn’t make any drastic design changes. The laptop has lots of glowing LED lights, sharp edges on the plastic body, and giant plastic exhaust vents that scream gaming. The massive metallic blue dragon above the keyboard is a design element. It’s worth noting that this panel is removable, so you can choose from 20 different designs to access the internal hardware.

Battery Life: The Downside

However, the Predator 21 X has its downsides, and battery life is one of them. Even with lowered expectations for gaming laptops, the battery life is still disappointing. The Predator lasted 1 hour 51 minutes on the Verge Battery Test, which cycles through a series of web pages in Google Chrome. Unplugged for gaming, and it’s even worse. It lasts under an hour, depending on how hard you’re pushing it.

You can hypothetically use the Predator unplugged for a few minutes, but it was clearly designed to be plugged into the wall. The power bricks (yes, there are two of them, each huge) add to the comedy of the setup when placed together in the custom rubber enclosure that comes with the laptop.

Not for Everyday Use

The Acer Predator 21 X is a gaming beast, but when it comes to regular computer tasks, it falls short. Since it’s a single-purpose gaming laptop, I was curious to see how it would perform in my daily life. After all, it’s a $9,000 machine—surely it can handle basic computing tasks, right?

Size is a Problem

In short, the 21 X is not good at regular computer tasks. The first hurdle is, of course, its size. I’ve mentioned its bulk before, but trying to go through a door without dropping this massive laptop really made me realize how ridiculous it is to even try to use it in an office setting. The weight and size are impractical for everyday use, and I found myself constantly aware of its presence, which is more of a hindrance than a help.

In my case, I often wish for a more portable option. While I appreciate the engineering that went into this beast of a machine, most of us need a laptop that can easily transition from home to office or coffee shop. The Predator 21 X, with its bulk, feels more like a desktop replacement than a true laptop.

The Mechanical Keyboard Problem

Another major issue is the full mechanical keyboard that comes with the 21 X featuring standard desktop Cherry MX Brown switches. I personally love the tactile feedback and responsiveness of the MX Brown switches for both typing and gaming, but the noise level is a different story. The keyboard is loud – very loud. My entire pod of coworkers had either commented, complained,d or possibly plotted my demise in a secret Slack room due to the constant clicking.

I can see why the noise would get on people’s nerves, and I apologize to my coworkers—Dan, Ashley, Kaitlyn, Lizzie, Michael, and Kwame—for the disturbance! I personally love the sound of mechanical keyboards when I’m gaming at home, but in a shared workspace, it’s a distraction. I found myself self-conscious about every keystroke, which took away from my focus.

Awkward Ergonomics

Beyond the noise, the keyboard’s positioning is another issue. It’s situated at the front edge of the laptop rather than at the back where you’d expect it to be. This design choice means there’s no natural place to rest your palms except for the optional magnetic palm rest, which adds another thing to carry around. Even with the palm rest, the high height of the keyboard due to the thickness of the 21 X made it uncomfortable to use for extended periods.

I found myself constantly shifting my posture and adjusting my hands, which reduced my productivity. In the end, I ended up booting up my MacBook Pro when I needed to get actual work done, as it’s more comfortable and practical to type on. I’ve always valued ergonomics in my devices, and the Predator 21 X fails in that regard.

Gaming Performance is Where It Shines

All three of these issues – keyboard, screen, and trackpad – disappear when it comes to actual gaming. While the Acer Predator 21 X struggles with everyday tasks, it truly comes alive in gaming and shows off its capabilities and design.

A Screen for Immersion

The same can be said about the screen. On paper, the 21-inch curved panel sounds great for productivity. But the resolution is relatively low at 2800 x 1080 pixels—yes, it’s wide, but it’s the same vertical resolution as a regular 1080p panel. So you can stack tons of windows side by side, but you’ll find yourself manually adjusting text sizes to fit a reasonable amount of information.

That being said, when it comes to gaming, the screen becomes a wide, immersive canvas. The curvature enhances the field of view, making games like Battlefield 1 feel almost cinematic. The big screen allows for a more engaging experience, drawing you into action and making you feel like you’re part of the game. In this context, the lower vertical resolution becomes less of an issue as the immersive experience takes precedence over pixel density.

The Trackpad: A Unique Feature

There’s also the trackpad, which has the cool parlor trick of magnetically detaching and flipping over to turn into a number pad. As far as Windows computers go, the trackpad is actually quite good. Acer has included Windows Precision drivers, so it’s accurate and responsive, and all the swipes and gestures work well. But the trackpad itself is too small for a screen this wide, even with mouse sensitivity turned up. I found myself reaching for an external mouse even for regular work as it was more comfortable and efficient.

But when it comes to gaming, the trackpad becomes a non-issue. If you’re using the trackpad on the 21 X for gaming, then you’re already missing the point of this beast. Serious gamers will naturally gravitate towards a dedicated gaming mouse, which allows for precision and speed that a trackpad can’t match.

Performance

As for performance, you might be able to trip it up if you do advanced CAD work or heavy video editing, but there’s nothing in my workflow that could push it to its limits. The overclocked Core i7 and SLI-linked GTX 1080 GPUs mean gaming performance is top-notch and can handle the latest games with ease.

In the end, using the Predator 21 X for regular work feels like driving a Lamborghini to the supermarket – yes, it’ll get you there, but that’s not what you bought it for. This laptop is for gaming, and when you use it for that purpose, it really shines.

A Gaming Beast

When it comes to actually playing games on the Predator 21 X – its sole purpose – there’s not much to say. This is a $9,000 computer for one purpose and one function. Of course, it runs games well. With the hardware on offer here, it would be a shock if it didn’t.

Performance That Surprises

Still, I had to put the Predator through its paces, and the results were pretty much as expected. The Predator 21 X has a Core i7 and SLI-linked GTX 1080 GPUs, so it can handle the most demanding games with ease. But beyond the binary of whether or not games worked well, it’s the gaming experience on the Predator 21 X that sets it apart.

Put practicality aside for a moment, and you have perhaps the most powerful laptop ever made at your fingertips. The curved screen dominates your field of view and truly provides a more immersive experience—assuming the game you’re playing supports a 21:9 aspect ratio (not all do). This immersion can make a big difference in gameplay and overall enjoyment.

Ridiculously Fast

And this thing is just ridiculously, almost needlessly fast. Overwatch – one of my favorite games for comparative testing across gaming PCs – barely dipped below 200fps. This level of performance is not only impressive but also necessary for competitive gaming, where every millisecond counts.

Battlefield 1 – known for its stunning graphics and demanding performance – ran smoothly at Ultra settings. The visuals were gorgeous, and the gameplay was silky smooth, allowing me to fully immerse myself in the chaos. Rise of the Tomb Raider’s vast environments looked amazing, even at max res. The detail and clarity on the 21″ curved screen make every environment feel alive and rich.

Silent But Deadly

What surprised me more was how quiet the 21 X is, all things considered. Unless you deliberately set the fans to max, the laptop is relatively quiet, and you can focus on the game. But if you crank up the fan speed, the five fans spin up to what can only be described as hurricane force. While this may be necessary during long gaming sessions to keep temperatures in check, it’s also a reminder of the beast that lies within.

Performance, Not Practicality

The Acer Predator 21 X is an impressive machine. It has great gaming performance that few laptops can match. But it also shows exactly why this level of performance is impractical for everyday use. The 21 X runs games well but doesn’t justify the $6,000 premium over a less powerful desktop or even a comparable one.

The Weight of It All

Between the sheer size of the laptop, the chunky chargers, and the almost non-existent battery life, the 21 X is barely more portable than a desktop. In fact, there are many desktops that are more portable. The weight and size of the Predator make it a pain to move around, especially if you plan to move it more than just down the hall. The massive carry case that comes with it is necessary for any kind of mobility but adds to the overall inconvenience.

I found myself wondering if the 21 X is a portable gaming solution at all. It’s a laptop, but it feels more like a desktop replacement. If you’re going to use it at a desk you might as well just get a desktop setup that’s similar or better performance without the hassle of lugging around a behemoth.

Desktop in a Laptop

Even if you do decide to park the Predator 21 X at a desk and use it like a desktop computer, you’ll probably want to use a bigger external monitor and a separate keyboard. This setup would be hard to fit on one surface, especially since the laptop takes up so much space. The ergonomics of using the built-in keyboard and screen become even more of a challenge when you’re trying to create a comfortable gaming or work environment.

Cost vs. Value

You can build a similar-spec desktop for half the price of the 21 X. So, is the premium worth it for what’s essentially a joke about a portable device? The 21 X offers an amazing gaming experience, but its practicality as a portable is severely limited.

A Gaming Showpiece

But that’s the point of the 21 X. It’s not practical because it’s not meant to be practical. It’s a trophy for anyone who buys it—a status symbol of the biggest and best gaming laptop available. Of course, it doesn’t fit on a desk or in a bag because the Predator is meant to be seen and to make people take notes.

A Gaming Status Symbol

Despite all the price and practicality issues, I’m glad the Predator 21 X exists. For most consumers, it’s as unobtainable as a multi-million dollar supercar at an auto show. However, just like a Bugatti or Ferrari, the technology and engineering that went into the 21 X will trickle down to more affordable models in the Predator line.

We’re already seeing this with laptops like the upcoming Predator Triton 700, which clearly takes design and performance cues from its bigger brother. The innovations and advancements in the Predator 21 X will pave the way for future devices that can offer high-end gaming without the impracticalities of their predecessors.

The Coolness Factor

At the end of the day, it’s cool that someone managed to cram all this hardware into one device to achieve this one purpose at the highest level possible. The engineering that went into this machine is impressive and a testament to what’s possible in gaming technology.

For enthusiasts and gamers, the Predator 21 X is the ultimate gaming laptop. It’s a conversation piece, a work of art, and a showcase of technology. Even if it’s not the most practical for daily use, it embodies the spirit of innovation and ambition that drives the gaming industry.

Overkill: A Hidden Value

So yes, the Predator 21 X is overkill. But sometimes, overkill is underrated. It challenges the norms of what we expect from laptops and pushes the limits of performance and design. In a world where most devices aim for practicality and affordability, the Predator 21 X is a bold statement of excess and ambition.

In short, while the Predator 21 X may not be for everyone, its existence is a reminder of what technology can do. It inspires future innovation, gets the gaming community excited, and proves that sometimes it’s worth celebrating the unusual, even if it comes with a price.
